Coimbra

Where History Meets Heartbeat

Coimbra, beautifully embraced by the Mondego River, was once the capital of the Portuguese kingdom and continues to be a deeply fascinating city, owner of a glorious History, magnificent monuments and historical landmarks. The ancient University of Coimbra, classified as UNESCO World Heritage site, is a lighthouse of knowledge, as well as an enduring symbol of the Portuguese-speaking world.

City History

Where History Meets Heartbeat

In its earliest days, Coimbra was inhabited by the Celts and grew culturally as new peoples and civilizations arrived to shape its gardens and streets.

Always a symbol of resilience, Coimbra was the most important city south of the Douro River and became home to Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, as well as the nation’s first capital. It witnessed great stories, including the legendary forbidden love between King Pedro I (1357–67) and the court lady Inês de Castro - a tale that continues to inspire poets and writers around the world.

During the Renaissance, Coimbra transformed into a center of knowledge when King João III (1521–57) permanently moved the University to the city - a milestone that remains inseparable from the region’s traditions today.

Fado and Academic Traditions

If fado is considered the song of the Portuguese soul, Coimbra Fado is surely the music which marks the rhythm of the heart of the students’ city.

The history of fado de Coimbra - if Fado is considered the song of the Portuguese soul, Coimbra Fado is surely the music which marks the rhythm of the heart of the students’ city. Closely connected with academic traditions, Coimbra Fado was created spontaneously among student groups who, when settling in the city to attend university, took their Portuguese guitars with them.
